Why Tribeca Feels Different

Tribeca is shorthand for one of the world’s most respected film festivals, known for its breadth of programming. Attending for the second time this year, I finally understood why. It revealed itself in ways I hadn’t anticipated, what unfolded was genuinely illuminating. I found community, formed friendships that have outlasted the moment, and felt my understanding of storytelling (both the artform and the business of) expand in real time.

At its core, the festival is rooted in the soul of storytelling, across forms. It stretches beyond film into audio and gaming, each given space, care, and weight. Despite its proximity to Hollywood, storytelling here feels different, more expansive, more grounded, more true. Filmmakers, writers, producers, students of the craft and audiences all coalesce, and there’s an earthy pull to it.

Tribeca Audio: Where the Podcast Community Shows Up

I was particularly moved by the audio experience. Tribeca Audio can feel, at times, like the underdog from a bureaucratic standpoint but on the ground, it’s anything but.

The Tribeca Audio team, and everyone involved, are thoughtful advocates for a growing industry, fiercely protective, deeply intentional, and respectful of the contribution independent audio storytellers make. They create space for voices that might otherwise go unheard, bringing audiences closer to the people behind the work. It’s a community that genuinely shows up for one another, and that ethos is felt throughout.

Live Podcasts at Tribeca 2026

The live audio experience added another dimension. At times poetic, occasionally whimsical, always creatively rich. Sitting in a sold-out room, witnessing that exchange, was powerful. Projects like Audio Spice, Radiolab, and Fashion Neurosis reminded me just how expansive the medium can be, playful, probing, and deeply human all at once. These are people bringing ideas to life with unapologetic commitment and that stayed with me. As an audio storyteller, it’s deeply inspiring. As a listener, it satisfies a certain curiosity. Audio makes that connection feel immersive, intimate.

Tribeca X and The Storytelling Summit

I’m still thinking about how compelling Colman Domingo was in conversation about his creative process on The Awardist podcast, the presence, the acuity, the intention. And then there’s the energy of Tribeca X and The Storytelling Summit: the conversations, the insight, the curiosity in the room. People at every stage of their journey, all leaning in.

What Stays With You After Tribeca

There’s a devotion to storytelling at Tribeca that strips away any expectation of glitz, red carpets notwithstanding. What remains is something far more meaningful: people choosing to back themselves and their ideas, often without certainty, but with conviction.

The experience continues to resonate. I didn’t expect to leave feeling as deeply about the community, its generosity, its openness as I did about the work itself. But I did.
